Chicago Cubs drop series opener 6-2 as Milwaukee Brewers 6-2 pounce on Jameson Taillon in the first inning

Chicago Cubs drop series opener 6-2 as Milwaukee Brewers 6-2 pounce on Jameson Taillon in the first inning Jameson Taillon’s first season in Chicago has largely not played out how he and the Cubs envisioned.Lately he has pitched more like the version both sides hoped for when he inked a four-year, $68 million contract in the offseason, posting a 3.98 ERA and pitching into the sixth inning in eight of his last nine starts. Taillon knows the rotation is a big factor in what happens in the final month of the season as the Cubs try to get back to the postseason for the first time since 2020.“I feel like it’s a cliché, but starting pitching sets the tone for everything,” Taillon told the Tribune over the weekend. “So if we want to make a push and want to go where we’re trying to go, I feel like it starts and ends with pitching in general, but starting pitching always sets the tone.“For myself, I feel the ship has sailed as far as getting my numbers where I want them to be this year, and I’m not worried about it. All I’m worried about ...

Jose Altuve hits for cycle, Astros demolish depleted Red Sox 13-5

Jose Altuve hits for cycle, Astros demolish depleted Red Sox 13-5 All season long, the Red Sox have stayed afloat due to the newfound depth in their farm system. It’s how they’ve stayed somewhat in the Wild Card race far later in the summer than most experts projected, and why they are a fourth-place team with a winning record, rather than a last-place team under .500.But at this point in the season, it’s becoming clear that as deep as they’ve gotten compared to the last few seasons, it’s just not enough to carry them into October, past more complete, healthy teams.Red Sox starting pitchers have struggled to go deep into games, and Monday night’s 13-5 loss was no exception. Chris Sale lasted 4 ⅔ innings, and after he departed, Kyle Barraclough pitched the remainder of the game, wearing an unimaginable loss and 10 earned runs to protect the team’s depleted bullpen. The game started out well enough. Sale began with back-to-back strikeouts and worked around a two-out walk for a scoreless first. He was able to k...

Pope says some ‘backward’ conservatives in US Catholic Church have replaced faith with ideology ROME (AP) — Pope Francis has blasted the “backwardness” of some conservatives in the U.S. Catholic Church, saying they have replaced faith with ideology and that a correct understanding of Catholic doctrine allows for change over time.Francis’ comments were an acknowledgment of the divisions in the U.S. Catholic Church, which has been split between progressives and conservatives who long found support in the doctrinaire papacies of St. John Paul II and Benedict XVI, particularly on issues of abortion and same-sex marriage. Many conservatives have blasted Francis’ emphasis instead on social justice issues such as the environment and the poor, while also branding as heretical his opening to letting divorced and civilly remarried Catholics receive the sacraments.Francis made the comments in a private meeting with Portuguese members of his Jesuit religious order while visiting Lisbon on Aug. 5; the Jesuit journal La Civilta Cattolica, which is vetted by the Vatican secretariat of state, ...

The proof will be in the pudding and only time will tell, but markets are correct to respond favorably to these developments,” said Clifford Bennett, chief economist at ACY Securities.U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo said she and her Chinese counterpart agreed Monday to exchange information on U.S. export controls and set up a group to discuss other commercial issues.
